Applications for the 2026-2027 academic year open for New York City-based students in December of 2025 and for University of Miami students in February of 2026.

The Gatewell Therapy Center Externship is a year-long training opportunity offered to graduate students in mental health programs, such as clinical psychology and mental health counseling. Gatewell Therapy Center, based in New York and Miami, is a multi-disciplinary private practice with specialties in eating disorders, trauma, substance use disorders, anxiety/OCD, and infertility. The center is also a comprehensive DBT practice.

Requirements: This externship is open to second-year (or beyond) graduate students in psychology/mental health counseling programs. Gatewell participates in the National Matching Service externship match for students in New York and takes applications exclusively from the University of Miami for students in Florida.

Students must be able to commit to the practicum for one year and must be available for 16-20 hours a week. Students must be available on Monday evenings and Thursdays mid-day, with additional hours to be agreed upon based on program requirements and the practice’s need. Candidates who have clinical experience are preferred, as well as those who are mature, professional, and who possess strong written and verbal communication skills. As this externship is primarily remote, access to a professional workspace and solid internet is critical.

Responsibilities: At Gatewell, students conduct intakes and see their own patients (typically 3-6 per week). They co-lead DBT skills groups and are active members of the practice’s DBT consultation team. Additionally, they field new client inquiries, offer skills coaching to current clients, liaise with co-treating providers, and co-conduct immigration evaluations. Students explore and write about clinical topics throughout the practicum year and have opportunities to present to the public.

Experience: Gatewell allows students to develop their professional identities and hone their clinical skills. Hours spent at the center are part of a student’s academic studies, with universities providing course credit for the externship. Students receive weekly individual supervision (one hour), as well as weekly group supervision (90 minutes) in the form of the practice’s DBT consultation team. They are provided with relevant texts and participate in a number of complimentary trainings throughout the year. In addition to learning other evidence-based modalities, they acquire the entire DBT skills curriculum during their practicum, typically aiding in their clinical confidence and their marketability as professionals. Prior students have successfully landed sought-after jobs following completion of the externship year.
