Gatewell Therapy Speaks Out at Fattitude Screening in Miami

MIAMI, Feb. 23, 2018 – Gatewell Therapy Center proudly sponsored the Alliance for Eating Disorders – Miami Chapter Fattitude screening on Thursday Feb. 22, 2018.

Fattitude, a documentary created by Lindsey Averill and Viridana Lieberman, speaks out against culturally-sanctioned fat discrimination and weight bias. The film features an array of prominent activists, including Virgie Tovar, Jes Baker, Lindy West, Marilyn Wann, Sonya Renee Taylor, Melissa Fabello, and Ragen Chastain.

Following the screening of Fattitude, Gatewell Therapy Center’s founder, Dr. Stacey Rosenfeld, psychologist, Certified Eating Disorders Specialist, and author of “Does Every Woman Have an Eating Disorder? Challenging Our Nation’s Fixation with Food and Weight,” participated in a panel to offer her reactions to the film.

“I think everyone in this room should follow all the people interviewed for the film. The activists are such great people to follow on social media. You can almost create your own little bubble where you can actually live in a fat-positive world. I live in that world,” Rosenfeld said.

The film hones in on weight stigma, oppressive and prejudicial stereotypes of fat people, and the reality of fat shaming in our current cultural climate.

“I think it’s incumbent upon all of us, regardless of the size of our bodies, to be allies. Even if you live in a thin body, weight stigma impacts you,” Rosenfeld said.

The film challenges the idea of referring to, and treating, “obesity” as a disease. The panelists agreed that the language (derived from the medical community) we typically use to describe fat bodies is long overdue for change.

“Fat is not a disease, and I think when we talk about it as a disease, we pathologize bodies in a way that does no one any good,” said Rosenfeld.

Fattitude addresses the biased, oppressive narrative surrounding fat bodies. Gatewell Therapy Center encourages widespread viewing of this illuminating documentary.
